Heart Conditions

Disabling conditions often lead to a loss of quality of life. The complications of a disability may make it impossible for a person to work, and loss of income makes paying for necessities like housing, food and even medical treatment for the condition difficult or impossible. Disabled individuals who have worked in the past may be eligible for social security disability insurance (SSDI) benefits.

SSDI benefits are paid out when a person suffers from a severe disability that makes working impossible. The disability must be expected to last at least 12 months in order for a person to qualify for SSDI benefits. The insurance program is managed by the federal government and funded through paycheck deductions. While SSDI benefits are considered to be a form of assistance, these payments are earned through work history.

What are Heart Conditions?

Heart conditions cover a wide range of conditions that cause serious symptoms and complications. Common heart conditions that cause severe complications include coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arteriosclerosis and aneurysm.

Coronary artery disease develops when the arteries leading to the heart become clogged and narrow. Blood flow is restricted due to the clogging of the arteries, and the heart is not able to get adequate oxygen in order to function normally.

Congestive heart failure occurs when blood traveling to the heart backs up and causes congestion in the tissue surrounding the heart. The backing up of blood happens as a result of a failure of the heart to properly pump blood to organs found throughout the body. Complications of congestive heart failure include general swelling, fluid in the lungs and difficulty breathing.

Arteriosclerosis is a hardening of the arteries that occurs as a person ages. Blood is not able to flow through the arteries when blockages develop. Complications of arteriosclerosis include heart attack, chest pain and heart failure.

An aneurysm is a bulge in an artery that occurs in response to weakness in the affected portion of the artery. People who suffer from an aneurysm may be unable to exert themselves physically due to the risk that the aneurysm will rupture. Ruptured aneurysms require surgical intervention and can result in death.

Getting Disability for Heart Conditions

If order to qualify for SSDI benefits with a heart condition, an applicant must prove that the condition severely limits his or her ability to perform job tasks. This proof is usually provided in the form of results from exercise tolerance tests.

Because qualifying for SSDI benefits with a heart condition is a matter of proving physical limitations, it is important for sufferers to regularly seek medical treatment. Records maintained by a licensed medical professional will be used as evidence of the nature and severity of the condition. Results from tests that are used to diagnose heart conditions and determine the severity of these conditions are also used to determine whether a person qualifies for SSDI benefits.

Getting Help from an Attorney

Trying to apply for SSDI benefits without help can be frustrating and upsetting.
